Ground Breaking Technology Allows Mental Health Patients To Track Conditions And Interact With Clinicians and Facilities Electronically

We are thrilled to be part of this project as it not only breaks through barriers for mental health patients, but also allowed us to expand the offering of InstantPHR into other life-saving endeavors

Real Consulting, in conjunction with South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and Microsoft, today launched MyHealthBox, the world’s first patient-held electronic health record in the field of mental health.

The launch event, held at the BFI Southbank in London and highlighted by the products’ introduction by Health minister Lord Howe, also included a panel discussion and a demonstration of Get Real’s award winning InstantPHR, the platform on which MyHealthBox is designed.

“This ground-breaking application once again demonstrates the agility of the InstantPHR platform,” says launch attendee and Get Real President, Robin Wiener. “The health journal featured in MyHealthBox, for example, is unique and completely customizable to the user and enables them to track symptoms, sleep patterns, behavior and emotions in any format they choose. A calendar function, sliders, and color-coding are but a few of the revolutionary features of this widget. We are thrilled to be part of this project as it not only breaks through barriers for mental health patients, but also allowed us to expand the offering of InstantPHR into other life-saving endeavors.”

Get Real’s solution for SLaM is not only privacy ensured through Microsoft HealthVault, but allows clinicians and patients to work collaboratively on care and treatment, enables facility staff to contribute to records directly and features dual interfaces; one for children and adolescents and another for adults.

The aim is to encourage a more equal dialogue between service user and clinician and improve the nature of the relationship.

Mike Denis, SLaM’s Director of Information Strategy, said: “We are the first mental health organisation in the world to pursue information sharing with patients in this way and we believe that MyHealthBox will ultimately lead to better patient care. This is not just about giving people access to their health records. This approach encourages a two-way flow of information between patients and their clinicians. It will provide patients with information that gives them more control over their health and wellbeing, empowering them to make informed decisions and provide meaningful input into their own care plans and treatment methods – which will ultimately lead to better patient care. The heart of this is about openness, transparency and choice.”

SLaM service user Richard Barefoot took part in a consultation about the introduction of MyHealthBox. He said: “I am now certain that an electronic record of this kind could be of great personal benefit to my mental health recovery. For the first time ever, I feel, that if the information stored within the record is consulted prior to a meeting with a health professional and service user, that a truly meaningful dialogue could emerge that could hasten recovery, or at the very least help to identify symptoms that could be averted to avoid any major set-backs. I am truly encouraged by the development of this meaningful electronic aid.”
