Longtime Mill Valley favorite Frantoio Ristorante showed this month that not all of the Bay Area’s best restaurants are in the city when it finished ahead all of San Francisco’s more celebrated Italian eateries to finish second in ABC7’s “Best of the Bay Area” A-list competition.

...to finish ahead of so many great San Francisco restaurants is a great honor and is testament to the fantastic support of our clientele and the hard work of all our employees.

Chef Duilio Valenti, the man behind Frantoio’s legendary cuisine, has been impressing the palates of patrons for nearly two decades, and those mouths have spoken. Before joining Frantoio Valenti gained a wealth of international experience. He grew up in Milan, where his father was founder of the sommelier association of Italy. After graduating from the Lombardy Culinary Academy, Valenti landed a coveted position as a pastry chef for the Gualtiero Marchesi, the only Michelin three-star restaurant in Italy. He later moved to America where he was hired as a chef at the acclaimed Rex Ristorante in Los Angeles. Valenti then went on to executive chef at Bice in New York. For the last fifteen years he has been building a loyal following in Mill Valley with Frantoio, and it is the strength of this local support that helped in the competition.

The Bay Area A-list is entirely voted on by members of the public, a point which has not gone unnoticed by the Frantoio General Manager Tom Buswell. “To be voted into second place in a competition that encompasses the entire Bay Area is a huge vote of confidence from our customers.” He continues “to finish ahead of so many great San Francisco restaurants is a great honor and is testament to the fantastic support of our clientele and the hard work of all our employees.”

Frantoio opened in August 1995 near the entrance to Tam Valley. Located next door to the Larkspur Hotel Mill Valley, Frantoio unites rustic country charm with chic contemporary design for an elegant atmosphere. Sourcing and serving locally produced fruit, vegetables, seafood and meats, Frantoio remains loyal to its Italian roots while supporting the local economy.
