With the 2012 hurricane season starting June 1st, travelers with pre-booked trips to destinations on the U.S. East Coast, Florida, Mexico, and Central America should consider travel insurance with hurricane coverage, advises TravelInsuranceCenter.com.

Experts are predicting a “normal” hurricane season this year, which means 10 to 12 named storms, five to seven hurricanes and one or two major hurricanes between June 1st and November 30th. Drennen recommends that customers insure their trip as soon as they make a deposit or payment. This will ensure they qualify for all the benefits available on the policy, including unforeseen hurricanes that may cause cancellation or delay, or render their vacation destination uninhabitable. It is especially important that travelers purchase coverage before the storm has been named. It doesn’t pay to wait until there is already a storm.
“Every year we receive calls from people who believe they can purchase hurricane coverage for a storm that has already been named,” Drennen said. “We politely explain that that would be like trying to buy an auto insurance policy at the scene of the crash. Insurance companies just aren’t looking to cover someone who potentially has a guaranteed claim.”
Drennen also says it is important to note that not all trip protection plans are created equal when it comes to hurricane coverage. Benefits vary by policy, with some policies featuring less restrictive policy language than others regarding weather-related cancellations. One policy might cover claims related to “inclement weather causing delay or cancellation of travel.” While another might stipulate “weather that causes complete cessation of services of your common carrier for at least 24 consecutive hours.” This language is very important when it comes time to make a claim, Drennen says. “You definitely get what you pay for.”
“The purchase of travel insurance for protection against the possibility of a hurricane ruining your travel plans is like spinning a roulette wheel. You never know if or when your number is going to come up,” Drennen says. “Then again, the purchase of any insurance product is that way. But you definitely need to be prepared because it only takes one hurricane to ruin your trip.”
