During the six months that James Schmidt commanded an infantry company in Vietnam, that company killed or captured approximately 60 enemy soldiers without losing any of its own. He credits that incredible record with God’s blessing, and offers to readers his new book “Victory Rests with the Lord: God in the Vietnam War” (published by WestBow Press), a memoir in which he cites that many ways he believes God allowed the United States to lose the Vietnam War.
“God allowed the United States to be defeated in the Vietnam War in order to discipline the nation for its disobedience,” he says, “while blessing an infantry company for acknowledging their dependence on God.”
An excerpt from “Victory Rests with the Lord”:
“The Bible tells us that it is God who provides men with the wisdom to win in battle, and this book provides clear evidence that God denied America’s senior commanders the wisdom to employ sound tactics in Vietnam. It not only explains how these failed tactics contributed to the United States’ tragic defeat, but it identifies better tactics which, if used, could have led to victory.”
Schmidt knows that his ideas and beliefs remain applicable today, especially in light of the ongoing [conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. “America’s society has not repented for its disobedience and acknowledged its dependence on God,” he says, and that lack of repentance may, he believes, continue to cost America victory.
