ROMANCE, Ariz. – Having found success as a professional businessman, Lynn Dorrough set his sights on writing, offering his new business-focused book, Kidnapping, Murder, and Management: The Reading (published by Trafford Publishing).
Drawing inspiration from real-life experiences, Dorrough gives his life story a fictional twist in order to protect the identities of its characters and respect their privacy. Told in a series of more than 40 letters written from the author’s “novelized” self to his cousin, Kidnapping, Murder, and Management offers a fictional account of the two men’s professional and family lives throughout a 15-year period.
Straightforward and genre-defying, Kidnapping, Murder, and Management is a rare combination of complex character study and straightforward business guide. Dorrough employs ample metaphors throughout the text, and the actions and ruminations of the two cousins shed light on the application of management theory and interpersonal relations.
Kidnapping isn’t just a catchy name for the book; the letters between cousins describe how one was taken at gunpoint, and the experience causes him to reflect on how his management and business skills could aid him in escaping his abductor:
My business experience has trained me to strive to be the best in whatever environment occurred. The alternative business solution is to become the closest confidant of the leader of any situation, to actively seek such a close and personal role with my opponent was both unlikely and unseemly given his criminal endeavor. It was my solution to stand sufficiently above the actions of most kidnap victims so as to raise the probability of my survival. The trick was to take this course of action without creating undue animosity in my captor.
