SFC Associates Announces the Addition of Affiliates Chi Lee, Robert Maroney and Professor Chester Spatt

SFC Associates, a fast-growing securities and financial litigation consultancy, has expanded its structured products capabilities with the addition of three affiliates: Chi Lee, Robert Maroney and Professor Chester Spatt.

“Structured products, which were at the heart of the financial crisis, have become a centerpiece of litigation growing out of that crisis,” said SFC Associates founder and President Ezra Zask. “Our company has earned a solid reputation as an expert in this area, and the addition of these outstanding individuals to our strong existing lineup of in-house professionals and affiliated experts ensures that we remain a go-to litigation consulting firm in such cases.”

Brief biographies of the three new affiliates follow:

Chi Lee has consulted on more than 20 structured products-related matters. His expertise includes the structuring, pricing and trading of complex structured products such as asset-backed collateralized debt obligations (ABS CDOs); CDO-squared; collateralized loan obligations (CLOs); and residential and commercial mortgage-backed securities (MBS). As head of the ABS derivatives desk at UBS until 2008, Lee structured and traded bespoke products that referenced portfolios of residential and commercial MBS, as well as CDOs. Lee also structured the first hybrid synthetic CDO that was backed by an asset-backed collateralized default swap. Lee has an M.S. in mathematics in finance from New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and a B.A. in economics and psychology from Dartmouth College.

Robert Maroney has more than 20 years of experience as a mortgage finance professional and credit analyst. Maroney provides expertise in all aspects of mortgage loan origination, underwriting and securitization, covering such areas as underwriting guidelines, policies and procedures; federal and state regulatory compliance; and property valuation practices. Maroney’s experience at institutions like Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, Moody’s Investors Service and WaMu Capital Corp. includes coordinating loan level credit, regulatory compliance, and property due diligence for bulk whole loan purchases. Maroney has an M.B.A. in economics and a B.S. in finance, both from the Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John’s University.

Chester Spatt is the Pamela R. and Kenneth B. Dunn Professor of Finance and Director of the Center for Financial Markets at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business in Pittsburgh. During a long and distinguished career, Professor Spatt has established a reputation as a scholar in finance, including securities markets. This includes expertise in such areas as auction rate securities (ARS), including the use of ARS for municipal bonds, fixed-income valuation and hedging; taxes; financial markets; and disclosure and regulation. Professor Spatt has also served as the Chief Economist and Director in the Office of Economic Analysis at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He holds a Ph.D. and an A.M. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and an A.B. in economics from Princeton University

During the past two years, New York-based SFC Associates has enjoyed robust demand for its services from law firms, corporations and government agencies. In 2011, the company was retained to provide expertise in more than a dozen new cases. In line with that growth, SFC Associates has been ramping up its hiring and expanding its network of affiliates.
