21st Annual Pops by the Sea Takes on Enchanting Spanish Theme

Family-friendly SLO Symphony concert to feature world-renowned special guests in Avila Beach

Pops by the Sea is more than just a popular concert. It’s an important fundraiser for the SLO Symphony. Now in its 21st year, the concert supports a multitude of artistic and educational concerts, events and programs every year.

Maestro Michael Nowak and the San Luis Obispo Symphony (SLO Symphony) will transform a golf course into a centuries old Spanish courtyard with the rhythms and melodies of classical Spanish music this Labor Day weekend.

“Pops by the Sea 2012: Pops Romantico!” will feature popular music with a Spanish flair on September 2 at Avila Beach Golf Resort. Special guests this year include world-renowned classical guitarist José Maria Gallardo del Rey and violinist Anabel García del Castillo, who will move the crowd with their hauntingly beautiful and intense melodies.

Pops by the Sea is an annual family-friendly concert that draws more than 3,000 people every year to Avila Beach, Calif. But Pops by the Sea is more than just a popular concert. It’s an important fundraiser for the SLO Symphony. Now in its 21st year, the concert supports a multitude of artistic and educational concerts, events and programs every year.

This year’s show is set for Sunday, Sept. 2. Gates open at 2:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 4 p.m. Tickets start at just $15 for adult lawn seating and is free for children age 14 and younger. Large groups can reserve a table. Party tables cost $30 per person, premium party tables cost $40 per person and champagne tables cost $850 for a complete table of 10. Guests who ride a bike to the show earn a $3 discount on lawn seating and a chance to win prizes from local bike shops as part of the SLO Symphony’s “Pedal to Pops” program.

This year’s show will feature Mr. Gallardo del Rey, a guitarist who has achieved universal public and critical acclaim since his debut in Seville at the age of 9. His profound affinity for all aspects of the guitar has made him a leading authority on the instrument among conductors and players alike. Likewise, Ms. García del Castillo is known the world over for her masterful technique as a violinist, which has earned her critical acclaim and numerous accolades.

A free Pops shuttle will be available for all areas of San Luis Obispo County, but reservations are required. A detailed shuttle schedule and online reservations can be found at http://www.slosymphony.com. For those who choose to drive, the Avila Beach Golf Resort will charge a parking fee of $5. However, carpools with four or more people can park for free.

Guests are welcome to bring a picnic, but no alcoholic beverages may be brought to the venue. Wine, beer and other beverages, and affordable picnic fare prepared by local vendors, will be available for purchase at the event.
