Austin, TX (PRWEB) May 21, 2012
Here’s some food for thought: Some 3 million Americans live with Celiac Disease, a medical condition that is aggravated by eating products containing gluten (NFCA, 2011). Another 29 million are either vegetarians or follow a vegetarian-influenced diet (Vegetarian Times, 2011). And a whopping 51 percent of Americans prefer to buy and eat organic foods whenever possible (Food Marketing Institute, 2006). While eating healthier is becoming more commonplace in America, dining out can often be challenging when following a specific diet. But now there’s a new website that makes planning a dining-out experience a piece of cake. Locate Special Diet (http://www.LocateSpecialDiet.com) helps users find local businesses that cater to their specific dietary needs, whether they are in search of gluten-free menus, vegetarian meals or the area’s best organic specialties.
With a database that includes more than 30,000 food-based businesses in 26 major U.S. cities, Locate Special Diet allows users to search for grocery stores, bars and restaurants that serve gluten-free, vegetarian and organic menu options. Additionally, users may narrow their search by location, and by including a specific category such as Italian or Mexican food, or by adding extra features such as kid-friendly or outdoor dining. Once a user creates a free account and customizes their location and dietary preferences, their information is saved for future uses. Users can then search and submit local businesses, and add tips, photos and menus to their favorites list. They can even search tips from other users. And in order to maintain quality control, all submitted businesses undergo a stringent approval process before being added to the usable database.
Also launching soon is the Locate Special Diet mobile app for the iPhone, iPad and Android, which includes a map feature and allows users to search for gluten-free, vegetarian and organic options based on their current location.
Created by nutritionist and food writer Jessica Meyer, whose ATX Gluten-Free blog has gained thousands of faithful readers, Locate Special Diet is an idea developed from Meyer’s own struggles to identify restaurants that could cater to her gluten-free dietary restrictions. Meyer and her team spent more than a year conducting research and developing Locate Special Diet to ensure the best possible product is available to users.
“The idea really came from a personal need,” says Meyer, founder and CEO of Locate Special Diet. “When I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2008, I struggled with a way to eat safely, not only in Austin, but in the places I traveled too. I came up with the idea to create a gluten-free mobile app and website after trying others that didn't meet my needs successfully. Then we decided to add vegetarian and organic options after seeing a need for this in the mobile space. Reading comments and emails from the thousands of blog readers of ATX Gluten-Free has really inspired me to help others living the lifestyle I live. My goal was to build a product that not only made people’s lives easier, but one that was also fun and convenient to use. I believe we have accomplished this with Locate Special Diet.”
