(May 21, 2012) – Great Lakes Racing, LLC will host the first annual Great Lakes 100 Mile Triathlon to benefit YMCA Camp Kenan and Camp Kenan’s Camper Scholarship. The race will take place on October 6th, 2012, providing breathtaking autumn scenery and potentially challenging elements for participating athletes.

USA Triathlon membership grew 600% between 2000 – 2011. Organizers of the local event believe the unique triathlon distance will appeal to a wide range of athletes and draw accomplished racers from Western & Central New York, Ontario Canada and the surrounding region.

“We are fortunate to have the natural resources the Niagara Frontier provides. Our goal for the event is to provide athletes with a unique experience while helping more youth attend camp in 2013”, says Bob Timkey, USA Triathlon Certified Race Director.

The course will require athletes to swim 1 mile of Lake Ontario, bike 84 miles up the Niagara Escarpment and run 15 miles along the shore of Lake Ontario, passing an historic scenic lighthouse.

A major benefactor of the race, YMCA Camp Kenan, allows youth to develop an appreciation for nature, make new friends, and enhance a positive self image. Its Camper Scholarship Fund helps to bring kids to camp. Local and national sponsors across industries have signed up to support and ensure the event’s success.

Area resident Jeff Folckemer, CEO & President of LocalEdge media adds, “We are proud to sponsor this triathalon. Local Edge supports a number of organizations throughout the year that cultivate a positive environment for our youth. The Great Lakes 100 Mile Triathlon will open the experience of Camp Kenan to area children who may not have had this opportunity before.”

Flexible corporate sponsorship opportunities exist to suit any partner’s budget for the triathlon.

“The YMCA and Camp Kenan operates on funding from a variety of partners. We are grateful to host and partner with Great Lakes Racing for the 100 Mile Triathlon’s upcoming world class event” adds Luke Kantor, Camp Kenan Director.

The sport of triathlon was born in Hawaii in 1978 and gained popularity throughout the U.S. in the decade that followed. Today, athletes from around the globe gather in Hawaii every October for the Ironman World Championships.
