20 Days Remaining Until the 2nd Annual Grand Rapids Triathlon

June 10th, 2012 marks the day that the Grand Rapids Triathlon will introduce the 2nd annual USAT-sanctioned race, offering Sprint, Olympic, and Half-Iron options for participants.

The Grand Rapids Triathlon will span across Ada and Cascade communities, beginning along Thornapple Drive and Buttrick Avenue. The course is relatively flat terrain, providing opportunities to improve personal record or achieve completing a triathlon in your own backyard.

As race day approaches, registration has already exceeded 2011’s record of 833 athletes. Co-director, Ann Vidro reports registration at 895 participants and growing.

Co-directors, Ann Vidro, Andy Vidro, and Bob Karel have teamed up with title sponsors, Fox Motors and Huntington, and many other local businesses to make the second year another success for participants, volunteers, and spectators alike.

2012 Additions

  •     The race has been chosen by the USAT as the only triathlon in Michigan to screen for young Olympiads, as part of the Talent ID Series. The Sprint Distance is now open to ages 15-19 for a chance to win scholarships and become part of the USA Olympic Team.
  •     Grand Rapids Initiatives for Leaders will be donating their time and energy to make homemade pancakes for both families and participants from 6am-10am. The pancake station will be located at the family fun area in Ada Park. Volunteers ask that a $1 donation be made for each pancake to help fund local GRIL programs.
  •     Race directors have decided to move the transition area from Thornapple Drive to Buttrick Avenue, allowing a longer transition area and more space for athletes.

Race day, June 10th, 2011, will benefit Miles for Special Smiles, a non-profit organization dedicated to help disabled children reach their God-given potential.
