Edwina “Eddie” Foster was born in Douglas, Arizona. After graduating from Eastport High School, Eddie received a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York, Oswego, and four Master’s degrees from Hofstra University, Summa Cum Laude. She still quips that she doesn’t know what she wants to be when she grows up. In 2000, Foster retired from the Patchogue-Medford School District where she had taught English, Reading and Science, was a Guidance Counselor, and K-12 District Coordinator. She received a New York State Science Teacher Summer Study Grant to do research in Oceanography at the Montauk Oceanographic Institute. She also coached basketball, softball, and bowling and was the advisor to many clubs and organizations. In 2003, Eddie proposed that the Fire Island National Sea Shore provide a walking tour of Fire Island from the Lighthouse to Smith Point for the public. In 2004, the Chief of Interpretation and Eddie worked out the logistics of such a program and the “Fire Island Trek” began and offered several such outings during that summer and for every summer thereafter.
