The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a landmark piece of legislation for African-Americans and for the entire United States of America. This act was intended to put an end to discrimination and provided an answer to the critical need for equal rights of African-Americans. But, more than four decades after its inception, there is still much room left for improvement. “Stepping Into Tomorrow: The Awakening”, a novel by Sebastain Cor-Dova, explores the present condition of black men and women in America through the experiences and observations of the main character, Sheila.

In Sheila, Cor-Dova channels his unwavering desire for improving the state of African-Americans. Like him, Sheila finds herself in a relentless quest for understanding the black condition and coming up with a solution for their plight.

Sheila is a young and upcoming chief executive officer at a prominent financial, marketing and investment firm in Chicago. She is troubled by the worsening condition of African-Americans in her country. In her attempt to come up with a solution, Sheila confronts the psychological stereotypes levied against blacks and examines the relationships between black men and women as well as their unique mindsets. As Sheila moves along her quest for understanding her fellow men and women, she discovers something about herself.

“Stepping Into Tomorrow: The Awakening” is a thought-provoking parable that explores the essence of identity, culture and nationality. Through the experiences of the novel’s characters, readers are given a glimpse into the lives of people seeking a better future and what it costs to make this possible.
