One year after the record-breaking Joplin Tornado, many damage claims still go unpaid by insurance companies. As the deadline to file lawsuits gets closer and businesses and homes remain in disarray, Doyle Raizner LLP has formed a special task force, Renew Joplin, to help residents get the compensation they're entitled to. Doyle Raizner has partnered with local attorneys Johnson, Vorhees & Martucci to form a legal team possessing both local knowledge and national experience.

The Joplin Tornado touched down outside Joplin May 22, 2011. It moved eastward across the entire town, reaching a strength of EF5 – the highest damage rating used by meteorologists – and became infamous as one of the deadliest tornadoes in US history. The tornado destroyed nearly 7,000 buildings including homes and businesses, killed 160 people and may have caused more than $2 billion in damage. Areas outside of Joplin, including parts of Jasper and Newton Counties, were also struck.

“The kind of tragedy we've seen in and around Joplin is just unprecedented,” Doyle Raizner attorney Jeff Raizner said of the situation on the ground. “Unfortunately many insurance companies are refusing to pay their claims, which just makes recovery even more painful. And we're halfway to the deadline to file suit.”

The deadline referenced above is a two-year time period to file suit, which may be reached as early as May 23, 2013. Many residents have seen their claims delayed by insurance agencies, who run down the clock until it's too late to be taken to court, then offer low-ball payouts or refuse to pay at all.

“It’s really a shame when an insurer acts as a roadblock, and not a partner,” Mr. Raizner said. “But we have professionals and experts who take a closer look and can evaluate the true damages, so our clients can try to achieve a fair resolution of their claim.” He advises tornado victims to act quickly: if an insurance company drags out, denies or disputes your claim, you don’t want to delay and risk missing a deadline.
