Pathfinders Task Force Secures Patent & Trademark

Through an affiliate, Disaster Solutions, LLC (DS) just secured U.S. Trademark approval for its Emergency Response teams labeled under the Pathfinders Task Force® (PTF). DS, a certified, Woman Owned Small Business, also secured a 5-year, GSA contract for these small response teams and personnel.

The Pathfinders Task Force is an All-Hazards Disaster Response Team out of West Palm Beach, Florida.

With three separate Mission Ready Packages, PTF is an all-hazards response team committed to providing mass-care disaster response to communities in need. PTF’s specialty is coordinating local, spontaneous volunteers, rapid training them, and organizing them into crews to search door to door for the unmet needs of the homebound vulnerable populations and then working to resolve those needs following a disaster. Since the inception of PTF in 1999, these teams have responded to disasters throughout the world.

A unique public-private partnership between the non-profit Eagles Wings Foundation (EWF) and DS enabled the Pathfinders Task Force to reach 126,000 homebound survivors of Hurricane Katrina in just 14 days. From the team’s Lessons Learned, mobile software was invented that allows first responders to collect time/date stamped and geocoded forms and pictures in a 100% disconnected environment (no cell-towers or internet) post-disaster. Pathfinders Eureka®, the name of the new software, was patented and trademarked earlier this year.

Hurricane Ike improved the team and the software’s response capabilities as reported in an After Action Review (AAR) review published by FEMA. After other responses, PTF was tasked by the World Food Programme to deploy to Haiti in response to the 2010 earthquake. The team was responsible for performing mass-feeding operations during the critical time period immediately following the catastrophic earthquake. In just 8 days, this 8 person team managed to distribute 2,429,200 meal rations.

The team’s Haiti experience led directly to the State of Louisiana tasking PTF to deploy to the Deepwater Horizon (BP) Oil Spill. During this deployment, the U.S. Coast Guard recognized the unique capabilities of PTF and subsequently embedded Technical Specialist from PTF in three Incident Command Posts covering the eastern Area of Operations for Louisiana. These teams were responsible for capturing approximately 48,000 geotagged forms and 18,000 pictures with the aid of 400+ boat crews trained by PTF personnel. In this 189 day mission, PTF provided real-time, situational awareness and synthesized a "tsunami of data" into daily, simplified Executive Summaries for senior command personnel.

In 2011, PTF was tasked by the Bahamian Prime Minister’s Office to assist with the Hurricane Irene response. The Bahamian Command tasked PTF to perform rapid, critical infrastructure reports relying on Pathfinders Eureka. PTF provided more than 2,000 geotagged photographs and filed reports from two PTF teams on three long, island chains in a disconnected environment.

Soon, Pathfinders Eureka®, using the same software engine, will be rolling out GeoCrowd™, a free social media app, based on real time mapping of photos and notes.
