Benchmarx™ Utility Monitoring and Benchmarking

Being able to visualize and monitor my neighbors’ progress on a daily basis was quite a social experience. I found the application enjoyable and a welcome departure from tedious line charts and bar charts.

The Patent Pending utility monitoring and benchmarking application Benchmarx™ was awarded Best Overall Application as part of the Biggest Energy Saver contest.

In a campaign to generate interest and underscore benefits of smart meter technology, the Biggest Energy Saver contest focused on residential consumers and how best to leverage their data rich 15-minute smart meter electrical reads. The Application Developer Contest invited app developers to build online or mobile applications to allow consumers more control over their energy management decisions.

Key voting criteria included:

  •     Average rating as determined by registered users
  •     Number of individuals who utilized the application
  •     Usability of application to facilitate energy management
  •     Most Innovative
  •     Accessibility of application across multiple platforms

According to Founder Robert Watson, the Benchmarx™ platform was originally tailored for commercial asset types such as office buildings, hotels, industrial, and multi-family communities. “We were somewhat reluctant to enter the contest since our focus had been primarily geared toward commercial assets, and with less than 2 weeks to prepare, the final decision came to one simple question - why not?”

“Fortunately, the Benchmarx™ GIS {Geographic Information System} graphical interface lends itself especially well to a variety of asset types, including houses and apartment units. As a result, the effort necessary to enter the competition was relatively moderate and we met the entry deadline with no problem. The biggest challenge was to formulate a residential-centric theme and brand to better connect with the contest participants. For that, we simply chose the ‘Smart Meter 500’, a racing theme. It sounded cool and, well, the url was available!”

One of the Benchmarx™ powered web app participants and winners, Daniel Santos of Mesquite, TX, found the user interface visually alluring. “Being able to visualize and monitor my neighbors’ progress on a daily basis was quite a social experience. I found the application enjoyable and a welcome departure from tedious line charts and bar charts. Not only that, but you could easily track your own progress after experimenting with various conservation measures.”

A total of 8 web and mobile energy management applications participated in the contest, some of which are backed by venture capital firms. Benchmarx has not yet accepted outside investment. “We are particularly pleased to have established our application among some well funded ventures, especially in light of our organic growth model to date.”, says Watson.

Sponsors of the Biggest Energy Saver Contest include Grid 21, Oncor, CenterPoint Energy, Landis+Gyr, Itron, GE Appliances & Lighting, IBM, and Tendril.

According to the contest website, “The Biggest Energy Saver contest generated interest from every state in the U.S. and more than 80 countries. In the period following the contest announcement, the Smart Meter Texas portal experienced a boost in registration of 172 percent over the same period last year.” More information regarding the contest can be found here, Biggest Energy Saver contest.

A “No Previous Winner” clause precludes the Benchmarx™ powered web app from participating in the forthcoming Apps for Energy contest sponsored by the United States Department of Energy.
