Houston, TX (PRWEB) May 24, 2012
For some, a swimming pool is a way to beat the summer heat, but for others, a swimming pool grants the gift of mobility and exercise. The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals Greater Houston Chapter (APSP) recognizes the health benefits of a backyard swimming pool and launched their “Dive Into Recovery” program, building pools for families in need. The Houston Chapter recently awarded First Lieutenant Daniel Ebarb with the gift of a swimming pool, changing his life forever.
The Houston Chapter donated a gunite swimming pool in February 2012 to First Lieutenant Ebarb after reviewing the many applicants who shared moving stories about how a swimming pool would be beneficial. All were certainly inspiring, but they selected the Ebarb Family from Sugar Land for his inspiring and patriot story that won the board’s hearts.
The industry came together to contribute the products and labor needed to complete the pool for the Ebarbs. The contributing companies include: Adams Tile and Coping, Advanced Concrete Designs, Aqua Cal, Best Clean up, Custom Electric, GDL Services, Hayward, Jandy, Muniz Decking, Age Rebar, Pentair, Platinum Pools, Prestige Gunite, R.D Pool Plumbing, Statewide Contracting, Rainbow Construction and Uno Pool Plastering.
“When we read Daniel’s story, we all knew that this was our 2012 recipient of the pool. We appreciate all that he has done to serve and protect our great nation.” shares Christopher Anderson, APSP President.
After attending the United States Military Academy in West Point, Ebarb fulfilled his lifelong dream of serving in the military, beginning active duty in 2005. It was during his tour of Iraqi Freedom in 2006 when Ebarb was posted on the tallest building in the area, and while patrolling the roof was shot by an Iraqi solider, that was working with him as his ally. Ebarb was wounded by an armor-piercing bullet, and if it had been a lead bullet he would have died. The bullet entered above his right collar bone at the base of his neck and right beside Ebarb’s spine. The wound cavity created a pocket of air next to his spinal cord, causing bruising, leading to paralysis.
The ability to swim is freeing to Ebarb, renewing his sense of self.
“One thing that is harder to do is get a good cardio workout. My body doesn’t regulate heat anymore, so being able to get into a pool to exercise is an amazing experience for me. It also makes me feel more like myself and mobile.” says Ebarb.
The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals Greater Houston Chapter not only looks to grow the members business’, but also to work within the community through outreach. They are focused on donating more pools to the appropriate Greater Houston Area families that could benefit from having a pool. The “Dive Into Recovery” program will be an annual community outreach for the association.
APSP Houston Chapter would like to identify another worthy candidate or family in need of a donated pool. The Chapter and its members will join forces this Winter and install a pool for the most inspirational and deserving applicant. Applicants will be able to apply online through the APSP website beginning June 2012.
