Remembering Our Veterans This Memorial Day: Children's Books Pay Tribute to Service and Sacrifice

Saint Louis, Missouri: As Memorial Day weekend draws near, families across the nation will be remembering loved ones who have served their country with honor. It is a day of reverence and reflection, paying tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their nation. For some, remembrance means flying the flag, attending a military parade, or placing flowers at the grave site of a veteran. For others, the three day weekend can all too easily be consumed by family gatherings and grilling out, the first taste of summer. For some families who do not have an immediate friend or family member who has served, it may be difficult to figure out an appropriate way to teach children about this important day honoring service and sacrifice.

Guardian Angel Publishing has found a way to help family members teach little ones about serving one's country with a line of children's books paying tribute to veterans and military families. Guardian Angel Publishing is proud to offer bilingual children's books about courage, hope, strength, and heroes that can be shared at any patriotic family gathering. "Ebeneezer's Cousin", also available in Spanish edition as "El Primo de Ebeneezer", sensitively deals with some of the challenges military families face in a way that will touch the hearts of children, parents, veterans, educators, and physical therapists alike. Told through the eyes of Maria Jimenez, a little girl who is proud of her daddy, "Ebeneezer's Cousin" delicately deals with the issue of parental deployment, joyful reunions, and in the case of Maria's father, an early return home from a mission for medical treatment from an injury. Written by Kristen Zajac, a former civilian analyst for the military and FBI, the book's appeal lies not only in the story of one brave military family's journey but in its capacity to teach and sensitize all children to appreciate the service and sacrifice veterans' families make. Rich with tenderness, the colorful and detailed illustrations by artist Jennifer Thomas Houdeshell capture the emotions and bond between Maria and her family in an honest and uplifting way.

Another patriotic offering, "Chasing the Spirit of Service", brings the true story of the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II alive to young people. It is frequently used as an educational resource in elementary schools. "Chasing the Spirit of Service" features young Emma who comes from three generations of Air Force pilots and misses her father when he travels. Her best friend Adam tries to cheer her up. Emma's great grandfather, one of the first African American pilots during World War II, shares his life story with Emma and Adam and helps them appreciate the spirit of service and sacrifice. Written by Kristen Zajac and illustrated by noted artist Julie Tucker, the book is the winner of the Global E Book Award in Multicultural Fiction. Anyone who has ever served in the military or has known someone who has served will appreciate the book's universal themes of duty to country, separation from family, and the importance of saying "thank you."

Guardian Angel Publishing staff hope these books inspire, uplift, and pay tribute to military families everywhere. Author Kristen Zajac and illustrators Jennifer Houdeshell and Julie Tucker regularly conduct patriotic book reading and workshops at schools, museums, and bookstores and wish all their readers a meaningful Memorial Day weekend honoring our fallen heroes.
