LINCOLN, RI (PRWEB) May 24, 2012
The 2012 hurricane season starts next Friday (June 1), so Amica Insurance is offering a checklist of hurricane safety tips and reminders as part of Hurricane Preparedness Week.
“Now’s the time to get emergency kits and evacuation plans in order, and to perform the repairs and maintenance needed to protect your home,” said Ted Murphy, superintendent of claims for Amica Insurance. “The more you can do now, the better prepared you’ll be when the storms come.”
This is a great time of year to inspect your roof, siding, foundation and basement to identify areas that need to be repaired or replaced, Murphy said. “You may also want to consider home improvement projects that will strengthen your roof, protect your windows and doors and secure soffits and vents to prevent water from getting inside during a storm.”
The Institutes for Business and Home Safety offers a variety of home improvement projects that will help reduce the risk of damage during a hurricane on its website, DisasterSafety.org.
But even routine maintenance – like trimming back dead trees and branches and making sure your gutters and downspouts are clear – can help, Murphy said. And if a hurricane is forecast, secure your home and yard as much as possible in advance. Bring lawn furniture, ornaments and toys inside. Secure grills, roofs, windows, doors, garage doors and other areas that are susceptible to wind damage.
Here are some other tips Amica Insurance offers to get ready for the 2012 Hurricane Season:
Visit the Amica Storm Center for dozens of safety tips and checklists explaining what to do before, during and after a hurricane or major storm. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) also offers tips. And, for more information on the upcoming hurricane season, visit the National Hurricane Center.
“Being prepared for a hurricane, or any other severe weather, is the best way to protect our families and our homes,” Murphy said. “Hurricane Preparedness Week is a great time to make sure you’re ready for any storm.”
