The Mauritian Ocean Classic and the Paddle for the Planet races are set to take place from 24th June to 2nd July. The Mauritian Ocean Classic is in its fourth year and has become a key event in the World Surf Ski Series; this twenty-eight kilometre race is the centrepiece of the festival and features on the 30th June. The Paddle for the Planet is a fund raising and educational race which takes place alongside the Mauritian Ocean Classic. This year the Paddle for the Planet race gets underway on the 2nd June, which is also World Environment Day. The proceeds of the Paddle for the Planet race go to International Green Peace and are used for marine resorts around the globe. As the Paddle for the Planet race becomes more popular, more money will be raised and more waters will become protected.
Mauritius is considered to have one of the best downwind courses in the world, as well as water temperatures between twenty two and twenty seven degrees Celsius, making the islands an ideal venue for the Ocean classic. Tamassa is the chosen partner hotel for this year’s race, competitors are required to check into Tamassa and all practice sessions and coaching will take place at the boat house in Tamassa. Le Morne is the finishing point of the race, the prize giving ceremony and lunch will take place at the Emba Filao restaurant, the main restaurant at Les Pavilion in Le Morne. This is the fourth year in a row that Mauritius is hosting the Ocean Classic event, which is combined with a surf ski week. It is hosted by Island Shamaal, which is a resort in the LUX Resorts group. Dawid Mocke, world champion of the Mauritian Ocean Classic is an ambassador for the Paddle for the Planet organization, encouraging people around the globe to participate in the event. All proceeds from the paddle for the planet race go to green peace. The paddle for the planet event unites paddlers all over the globe and encourages them to care about the ocean.
The Ocean Classic will begin at Souillac and end at Le Morne. Apart from the event itself, which takes place on Friday 30 June 2012, the week is full of activities for participants, with daily down paddles, coaching by Dawid Mocke and Barry Lewin(previous champions) and dinner at the main restaurant in Tamassa to enjoy time with their family members or friends who have joined them for support during the event. The Mauritius ocean classic event forms part of the ocean paddler world series, which is a series of races taking place all over the globe between January and December. The World Series is a total of seventeen races, currently Australian Mark Anderson is the leader of the series.
Competitors in the Mauritius Ocean classic will have the opportunity to meet Dawid Mocke, the champion of the downwind race for 2009/2010 and Barry Lewin, champion for 2011. There will be an opportunity to have training sessions with these champions of the downwind race. Dawid Mocke says “Mauritius is a great place to host this event and a very challenging spot. The competitors will have to be well prepared and ready to face the difficulties of the Indian Ocean.”
Albert d’ Unienville of LUX island resorts, coordinator of the Mauritius Ocean Classic event is expecting a new record of global competitors in the event. The Mauritian Ocean Classic is a key race in the World Series because of the down wind conditions. The Classic is the eighth race of the World Series.
The Paddle for the Planet and the Mauritian Ocean Classic are considered major annual highlights in the surf ski and paddling world. The Paddle for the Planet raises funds for Marine conservation and the Ocean Classic is part of a very competitive World Series.
