From wild flower meadows and alpine huts to the world’s longest dumpling table, Crystal Summer reveal why Austria is an ideal holiday destination.

St Johann in Tirol, Austria

The land-locked European country of Austria is well known for its spectacular scenery and mountainous landscapes. With peaks well over 3,500m the country is home to the Kitzbüheler Alps region and some of Europe’s best hiking ground. Infamous routes like the pan-Tirolean Eagle’s Walk are located here, winding its way from St Johann to St Anton, right across the province of Tirol. The route takes you through deep green valleys, small Alpine villages, rolling meadows, and forested hills with views to rugged mountains. The walk can be joined at various stages according to which resort visitors stay at. Joining the route at St Johann, for example, starts with a five hour hike into the Kaiser mountain range to the Gaudeamus hut at over 1,000m, between the Kitzbüheler Horn and the Kaisergebirge.

After a hard days hiking, refuel on typically Austrian hearty dishes; Wiener schnitzel, dumplings, lots of potatoes and apple strudel are likely to feature on menus. St Johann hosts an annual dumpling festival, Knödel Fest, each September. An incredible 22 varieties of dumpling can be enjoyed and washed down with beers from the local Huber Bräu brewery. The event sees over 25,000 dumplings consumed from the world’s longest dumpling table; at 300m in length it stretches from the outside the town right the way through to the main square.

Further activities in the area include rafting, canyoning, horse-riding, mountain biking and a high ropes course at Hornpark. Excursions to Salzburg, Berchtesgaden, and the waterfalls at Krimml are available too.
