"We made the case for a Better Dental Impression," says Vincent M Schuman.

Impressions are a critical step in the proper treatment of many dental problems. To that end, Impression technology has progressed considerably since its first use back in the early 1900’s.
Considerable time and effort has gone into developing better impression materials. Since the first use of agar in the 1930’s, impression material technology hasprogressed with the development of synthetic elastomers, including polysulphides, polyethers, and silicones.

Vincent M Schuman says despite the improvements in dental impression materials, dentists and lab technicians still struggle with a number of problems including, incomplete margin representation, voids or bubbles in the impression, voids or bubbles on the occlusal surface of adjacent teeth and cords impregnated in the impression bubbles on the margins of the tooth preparation.

All of these problems result in a poor or inadequate impression. Approximately 80% of impressions sent to laboratories contain non-discernible preparation margins. Additionally, dentists regularly have to redo impressions due to voids or bubbles in the impression.

Current developments in dental impression technology have focused more heavily on the impression material instead of the impression tray. Also the development of digital impressioning which is expensive and poorly received to date. What if an innovative design was developed for the impression tray which significantly enhances the quality, accuracy and efficiency of the impression?

Vincent Michael Schuman says the benefits of the vacuum assisted impression system are, can use existing impression materials, Improved accuracy; Minimization or elimination of voids, minimization or elimination of redos, minimization or elimination of cord packing, truly disposable unit (increased hygiene), allows for increase of sales, can be bundled with impression material of choice and manufacturing cost competitive with current tray designs turning cost competitive with current tray designs.
