IPS Testing of Wisconsin has recently received ISO 17025 accreditation. Serving clients in the United States and internationally, the independent testing laboratory is accredited for heavy metal and phthalates analysis and has added toy testing to its service offerings.

As regulation continually increases, it has touched the paper industry in unforeseen ways.

IPS Testing, a Wisconsin-based physical and analytical testing lab, has just announced that it has received ISO 17025 accreditation. This is the quality standard recognized globally for testing and calibration laboratories. With this certification, IPS Testing is now accredited for ICP analysis of heavy metals and GC-MS analysis of phthalates. The company has also added toy testing to its menu of services.

Bruce Shafer, president of IPS Testing, says the company pursued ISO 17025 accreditation because of the considerable increase in the amount of requests that relate to regulatory testing. He said the company has been providing analytical services focused on research and development and defect analysis for years in the paper, nonwovens, consumer products and packaging industries. The recent trend toward more stringent regulations including toy safety, food packaging and the Coalition of Northeastern Governors (CONEG) requirements led to the ISO application.

Companies that are certified through ISO 17025 have the added responsibility of showing proficiency with specific methods and equipment – heavy metals and organics analysis in the case of IPS Testing.

Shafer says, “As regulation continually increases, it has touched the paper industry in unforeseen ways.” He goes on to explain that while the company’s traditional client base does not manufacture toys, some do make the stickers that are placed on them. These stickers must be tested to ensure their safety in the event that a child was to remove and ingest them.

Along with regulatory testing for compliance purposes, adding heavy metals and organics analysis services gives IPS Testing the ability to work with clients in monitoring their processes from raw materials to finished goods. Shafer adds, “The testing of vendors’ or raw materials has become a significant part of our business as we have watched our clients move to global sourcing.”

IPS Testing serves as an independent testing laboratory for many industries including, paper, pulp and print materials; nonwovens; medical supplies; personal care and absorbent products; food packaging; and allied industries. IPS Testing combines physical and analytical testing along with interpretive data analysis to offer clients testing services that help improve and ensure the quality of their products.
