Boulder, CO (PRWEB) May 27, 2012
John Villani, author of “The Best 100 Art Towns in America”, calls Open Studios tour “one of the best in the nation.”
The first two weekends in October are eagerly awaited each year by art lovers in Boulder and along the Front Range. Now in its 17th year, Open Studios has accepted 128 applicants for this year’s tour. On October 6 and 7 and October 13 and 14, from noon to 6 PM each day, these artists will open their doors to visitors. With pride and eagerness they will show their work, explain processes and technique, talk about how and why they create, and share their love of art.
The mission of OpenArts, the parent organization that presents Open Studios, is educational, with the goal of broadening the community’s appreciation and understanding of the visual arts. This is achieved through the fall studio tour, which is also fun and exciting. Open Studios makes art accessible and non-intimidating for all ages, and each year is it enjoyed by a broad spectrum of the public. Many artists offer hands-on activities for adults or children eager to try their hand, so the tour makes for a good family outing.
Open Studios provides invaluable exposure for its artists and an opportunity to show their work to a large number of people during the two weekends. Should a studio visitor be moved to make a purchase, the artist will be happy to oblige. But there is no hard sell and no expectation that those on the tour will do anything but feast their eyes.
One piece from each participating artist will be on view in the Boulder Public Library, at 9th Street and Canyon Boulevard, for five weeks, from September 10 through October 15. This preview exhibition gives an excellent overview of the studio tour, and many people find it a good way to pick out favorites before sitting down with the map to plot their tour. The opening reception, which celebrates the participating artists and kicks off the fall tour, will take place in the library on Friday October 5 from 6-8 PM; it is free and open to the public.
As always, the Open Studios tour is supported by the sale of a comprehensive map, which locates every studio and provides a photograph of a sample piece by each artist. The artist’s name, address, phone number and the medium in which he or she works is also listed. The map is $10 and can be purchased at the Boulder Public Library on Tour weekends as well as at a number of local merchants such as Barnes & Noble and Whole Foods. Distinctive yellow yard signs helpfully identify each studio and are placed at critical directional junctions.
To get the most out of your tour, visit the Open Studios web site at http://www.openstudios.org to learn more about the artists who are participating. Individuals are grouped by such categories as medium, region, children’s activities, new to the tour, etc. There are photos of representative works along with artist’s statements.
