The Fearless Reviews, the Web’s most elegant and eloquent professional book review service for independent publishers, is back online after a two-year hiatus. Founded in 1998 by indie publisher D. Patrick Miller, founder of Fearless Books, the Reviews ran as a free public service for eight years before economic pressures forced two suspensions, the last occurring in 2010. Now reorganized on a review fee basis, the Reviews still offer the most thoughtful reviews of self-published and independently-published books online, at rates substantially lower than similar services currently available.
“As an independent publisher myself, I’ve always had reservations about paying or charging for reviews,” says Miller. “In fact, I ran the Reviews for a long time as a public service. But to pay my reviewers and spend as much time as it takes to edit and post the Reviews, I had to devise a model that’s economically sustainable over the long term while delivering good value to publishers.” He adds, “There are precious few opportunities to get indie books professionally reviewed anywhere these days, and that’s why the review fee model has become viable. But I think some of the going rates from other services are simply impractical for self-publishers and small houses."
The basic rate for a Fearless Review is $225, with a temporary introductory rate of $195. (Typical rates from other book review services such as Kirkus and Foreword are $379 and up.) In addition, Fearless offers established publishers the opportunity to be featured on a permanent Reviews page of their own, with two or more of their books reviewed for $175 each. The Fearless Reviews are posted not only on the popular Fearless Books site, currently visited by over 40,000 people annually, but are also posted to Amazon.com and other bookselling sites as appropriate. The Reviews are publicized directly to independent bookstores and announced via online press releases and various social media, with an ongoing effort to extend their reach.
