Google has earned the ISO 27001 certification for its Google Apps for Business suite, the highest certification standard in information security from the International Standards Organisation (ISO). This new certification covers the systems, applications, people, technology, processes and data centres serving Google Apps for Business.

Cloud computing host Google is awarded new ISO 27001 certification for it's Google Apps suite.

Google awarded ISO 27001 certification

“Our certification is robust as we had everything from engineers interviewed to the code within our apps audited. In comparison, other vendors only have their data centers and infrastructure certified,” Adam Swidler - product marketing manager at Google.

London: ISO 27001 is one of the most widely recognised, internationally accepted independent security standards. ISO 27001 certification is an information security management system (ISMS) standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The ISO 27001 management system brings information security under explicit management control which means that it mandates specific requirements. Google Apps’ new ISO 27001 accreditation allows the suite to be formally audited and certified compliant with the standard.

Google’s compliance with the ISO standard was certified by Ernst & Young CertifyPoint, an ISO certification body accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council, a member of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).

“Google is committed to ongoing development and maintenance of a robust Information Security Management System (ISMS) that an independent, third-party auditor will regular audit and certify,” commented Eran Feigenbaum, director of security at Google Enterprise.

Adam Swidler – product marketing manager at Google, who believes the new accreditation, will accelerate the adoption of Google Apps by medium and large enterprises also noted, “Our certification is robust as we had everything from engineers interviewed to the code within our apps audited. In comparison, other vendors only have their data centers and infrastructure certified.”

This is a big step for the internet giant as businesses were previously unable to audit Google’s datacenters and technology due to security reasons. This demonstrates Google’s unique ability to invest in security at a scale that’s difficult for competitors to achieve on their own.

Google Apps for Business is a powerful suite of cloud-based messaging and collaboration tools for any sized business in any global location. Google Apps is 100 percent hosted by Google which reduces IT costs, minimizes maintenance for and empowers over four million employees.
