Pete Cowen Tells Global Golf Post "I wasn't joking" When He Said Europe's "B" Team Could Beat the Americans This Fall

Famed British golf coach Pete Cowen told an assembled crowd of nearly 500 dignitaries gathered for the European Tour’s annual dinner that Europe could field two teams which could beat the Americans at the Ryder Cup in Chicago this fall.

And when given a chance to clarify his remarks, Cowen told Global Golf Post’s Lewine Mair “I wasn’t joking”. As detailed in Mair’s column in the May 28 issue of The Post, the assemblage was in disbelief, and several players tried to walk back Cowen’s comments themselves.

Cowen was at the dinner to accept the European Tour’s “Special Achievement” award. His clients over the years have included Lee Westwood, major champions Graeme McDowell and Louis Oosthuizen, and many European Tour players including sometime world top ten players like Sergio García and Darren Clarke. He has academies in England and in Dubai. He is also senior coach to the English Golf Union.
