Extensis announced today its resident typography expert Thomas Phinney will be a featured speaker this week at the Big Design 2012 Conference in Addison, TX.

The Big Design Conference is three intense days of learning within the scope of strategy, user experience, and code development. Experts from across the country gather to present theories, research, experiences, and best practices to students, professionals, and executives looking to stay on the bleeding edge of design.

As one of these experts, Phinney will deliver the following session:

CSS3 Web Typography Changes Everything

Day:         Friday, June 1st, 2012
Time:         10:00am

Description:    Web typography is changing dramatically thanks to browser support for new CSS calls to server-based fonts. Web designers now have thousands of font choices where they once had merely a dozen. But beyond basic use of web fonts, CSS 3 introduces myriad new OpenType typographic controls, bringing a level of typographic precision to web design previously seen only in print, and creative options most people are unaware of in any medium.

What Attendees Will Learn:

  •     How server-based web fonts work, and why they are replacing suddenly-obsolete alternatives.
  •     OpenType typography in action on web pages, from workhorse everyday typography such as ligatures and true small caps, to the surprising and bizarre, via fonts created by Phinney and friends. See intelligent fonts that translate text, censor naughty language, and more.
  •     “Correct” typographic use of new features for everyday typography.
  •     State and near future of advanced typography support in browsers via CSS 3.
