"We hope others will be inspired to see that there are tangible rewards for good savings habits." -- Neighborhood Credit Union President and CEO Chet Kimmell

As a prize for her excellent savings habits, one surprised and lucky DeSoto woman is starting out the hot summer with a cool $10,000 of cash in her Neighborhood Credit Union Prize Savings Account.

A stunned Joyce Davis opened her door early Tuesday morning to a porch crowded with Neighborhood Credit Union leaders and a giant $10,000 check with her name on it. They surprised her as she was getting ready for work in the optical department of a nearby WalMart.

“Oh my gosh! Is this real?” an initially-skeptical Davis asked. “I can’t believe it!”

The $10,000 prize was real, she was assured by Neighborhood Credit Union CEO Chet Kimmell, who explained that her name had been drawn from the ranks of the credit union’s Prize Savings Account holders. Davis previously won a $5 prize from the credit union.

“You are an excellent example of someone who has focused on saving her money and building a strong financial future,” said Kimmell. “We hope others will be inspired to see that there are tangible rewards for good savings habits.”

Neighborhood Credit Union created the Prize Savings Account to encourage more people to save money and plan for their future by rewarding good saving habits with prize drawings throughout the year.

Davis, who has been a member of Neighborhood Credit Union for nearly 15 years and banks at the Lancaster and Duncanville branch locations, said that after banking elsewhere in the past, she is a loyal member of Neighborhood Credit Union because of all the affordable financial services and friendly employees. She has a Prize Savings Account, Kasasa Checking account and Money Market account with the credit union.

What will she do with the unexpected windfall? Davis quipped that she may spend a little of it to upgrade her hotel during her upcoming trip to Las Vegas, but that she plans to keep most of the money in her Prize Savings Account.

How the Prize Savings Account works: Neighborhood Credit Union members receive one drawing entry for every $25 monthly average balance in their Prize Savings Accounts. The greater the savings, the greater the chance a member has of winning. Each month, drawings are held for prizes including $1,000 cash awards. At the conclusion of each year, a $25,000 Grand Prize winner is drawn. And this new $10,000 award is designed to encourage people to keep saving during the summer and throughout the year.
