Currently, Pennsylvania is ranked fifth in the nation for most reported dog bite incidents.
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) May 31, 2012
The attorneys at Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., are dedicated to helping the victims of dog bite injuries, and as such, are concerned with recent reports stating that there was a significant increase in the number of dog bite injuries in the state of Pennsylvania from 2010 to 2011. While exact numbers cannot be compiled, the number of dog bite incidents resulting in an insurance claim being filed increased by over 30% from the previous year, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Currently, Pennsylvania is ranked fifth in the nation for most reported dog bite incidents.
Pennsylvania has not been the only state to notice an increase in these incidents, however, as dog bites are on the rise across the country. Along with the rise of dog bite incidents has been an increase in the amount of compensation paid out by insurance companies to injury victims. In 2011, the total value of claims filed for dog attack injuries was $478.9 million, an increase of more than 16% from the previous year. As reported by MSNBC, this figure represented “more than one third of total liability claims paid out by homeowners.”
Explanations for the rise in this type of incident are varied. Some attribute most of the problem to the popularity of pit bulls and similar breeds of dogs, whose aggressive tendencies and muscular physiques may make them both more predisposed to be involved in attacks and more dangerous if an attack does occur. Others have suggested that the struggling economy may, at least in part, be to blame. With the stresses of an economic downturn weighing hard on many families, many are moving in together to reduce their living costs. In these situations, pets may be exposed to unfamiliar faces and feel threatened, increasing the likelihood of an attack.
Regardless of the cause, it is recommended that those with dogs take particular care with their pets. A dog attack can leave victims with injuries that may affect them for the rest of their lives. If you or someone you know has been the victim of a dog attack, the attorneys at Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., are here to offer their assistance.
