In these days of internet truths, many myths and legends of various claims are shattered. The legend of Damon, mythical singer/songwriter/musician was shattered today due to release of a video on YouTube.
Here's how the legend of Damon The Gypsy began . . .
A Canadian D.J. was at a flea market and was rummaging through a stack of 45 rpm discs. (Do any of you remember those 7 inch plastic discs with the big one inch hole in the center?). He eventually stumbled upon a different label, a deep green with a gold Ankh (Egyptian symbol for the Eye of Rah, the Sun God of Egyptian religion). It was truly a sight to see.
With the name of the song "Poor, Poor Genie," by an artist named Damon, for 25¢ - how could he pass it up? Not having a clue if the music was good or not, perhaps not even music at all, he just couldn't walk away. It turned out to be a very fortunate day for both he and Damon, soon to be called "Damon The Gypsy."
When the DJ heard it, he smiled and said to himself, "That’s very good; in fact terrific.” He then flipped it over to hear the "B" side, which in reality was the "A" side, the title listed was "Don't You Feel Me." The straight forward simplicity of the lyrics, the mystical, hypnotic sound, with a mid-eastern influence and rock & roll under girding had an immediate affect on him.
The DJ then went on a quest to find every song Damon ever did, and over the next ten years began playing every Damon song he could find. Soon the news spread and eventually Damon and his music became a bit of an underground legend.
As awareness of his music began to snowball, Damon’s music rose from 25c per recording up to as high as $3,000.00 on ebay. “Song of a Gypsy,” like a Phoenix, rose from the ashes to become one of the most sought after vinyls in the world. Usually in the top 5 of every record collector’s list. This acclaimed vinyl LP album "Song of a Gypsy" is listed by record collectors standard, Goldmine's Guide to Rare and Collectible Record Albums at $3,000.00 each.
Damon's music has since been used in the HBO Series,"Entourage."
