The National Association of Former Border Patrol Officers (NAFBPO) supports the responsible legislation introduced by Representative Steve Pearce, R-N.M. This legislation which was introduced on March 29, 2012 will provide Federal National Monument Status for all of the Organ Mountains located in Dona Ana County, New Mexico. Titled “Organ Mountains National Monument Establishment Act," it will insure protected status for the entire Organ Mountains complex by placing approximately 58,000 acres of the Organ Mountains located in Dona Ana County, New Mexico under Federal protected status.
There is no known disagreement among all parties that this area is uniquely qualified for that status.
Unlike other pending proposals which attempt to set aside up to six hundred thousand (600,000) acres of Dona Ana county with the unacceptable result of providing unenforceable drug and human smuggling corridors from the United States/Mexico border to deep into central New Mexico, this proposal fully meets the need to protect lands which qualify for National Monument designation by Congressional act while ensuring that national security and public safety are not compromised.
We applaud Congressman Pearce for his foresight in developing this innovative legislation as a means to effectively protect a sensitive area without jeopardizing Border Security as earlier proposals would create and maintain open avenues for illegal activity from the Border into the interior of the United States.
