The course will focus on the rapidly changing healthcare environment involving clinical, financial and regulatory issues and provide insight as to how physicians may become more engaged and able to facilitate the direction of health care. A schedule of early morning and after lunch lectures allows plenty of time to enjoy the scenic beauty along the Salmon River while studying the business of medicine.
The course chairman, Dr. Mark Williams, is the Chief Medical Officer of the North Mississippi Health System in Tupelo. Dr. Williams has an MBA, a law degree, and is a Certified Physician Executive by the American College of Physician Executives. Dr. Williams’ unique combination of medical, business and legal skills contribute to his broad understanding of the healthcare environment and its relevance to a variety of vested constituents. Joining Dr. Williams on the trip is physician and attorney, Dr. Gregory Palega, a hospitalist in North Carolina and Medical Director for MedManagement. Dr. Palega has extensive experience in corporate compliance and health law regulations and has handled hundreds of Medicare level care appeals. SMA’s President Dr. Michael Gosney, also an attorney, is Medical Director of the Shoals Pain Center, Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield, Alabama and Managing Partner of Anesthesia Medical Consultants, LLC. Dr. Gosney will lecture to the group and share his passion for physician advocacy during the course. All faculty are seasoned rafters and have made this trip previously.
The rafting trip is coordinated by Rocky Mountain River Tours, a licensed and bonded rafting company of the Middle Fork of the Salmon since 1978. With a professional river guide to guest ratio of 1:4, this adventure will be a safe and highly personalized river touring experience.
