Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) June 04, 2012

Several major U.S. companies, including AT&T, Constellation Energy, Papa John’s, Legg Mason, M&T Bank, Pepsi, and Under Armour, are joining the State of Maryland in a three-year effort to commemorate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. To date, corporate sponsors have committed more than $5 million to Star-Spangled 200, the non-profit 501(c)(3) supporting the commemorations honoring Maryland’s unique place in history as the birthplace of the Star-Spangled Banner and our National Anthem.

“At AT&T, we seek to support programs and initiatives that are important to the communities where our employees live and work," said J. Michael Schweder, president, AT&T Mid-Atlantic. “The Star Spangled 200 commemoration honors one part of Maryland’s unique place in American history, and we’re proud to be part of a series of events that will bring together Marylanders and visitors from across the country and around the world to observe this important milestone.”

J. Scott Plank, Executive Vice President of Business Development for Under Armour, and a member of the Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission, added: “As an international company founded and headquartered in Maryland, we couldn’t be more excited to partner with the State as it honors its rich history.”

The celebrations will begin in June with Star-Spangled Sailabration, an international maritime festival and air show, in Baltimore’s historic Inner Harbor. In addition to the major sponsors, more than a dozen Maryland and Baltimore area business leaders have committed their companies to support the commemoration events through June 2015. The State of Maryland has pledged $6 million.

“As we reflect on our country’s triumphant history, we have the state of Maryland to thank for supporting and strengthening our communities – yesterday, today and tomorrow,” said Mark R. Fetting, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Legg Mason, Inc., and Chair of the Defenders’ Circle. “We are very happy to count the Legg Mason Foundation as just one corporate citizen that, in partnership with the State, will continue building a strong culture of honor and integrity.”

“We are inspired by the generosity these corporate partners have shown, and look forward to working with them to demonstrate to the world what an important role Maryland has played in America’s history,” said Ann Beegle, Executive Director of Star-Spangled 200, Inc. “Their leadership support affirms the importance of this effort and sets the stage for some exciting things in the years to come.”
