Reykjavik, Iceland (PRWEB) June 07, 2012

On June 1st, 2012, Icelandair Hotel Akureyri officially added 37 new guest rooms, as part of a planned expansion. This brings the hotel capacity to 100 rooms. Icelandair Hotel Akureyri is a part of the Icelandair Hotel Group and is located in right in the center of the small north Iceland city of Akureyri, often called Iceland’s northern capital. Among the new rooms is a suite on the 5th floor with a beautiful views and large sitting area.

Icelandair Hotel Akureyri is a new hotel, having opened its doors in June 2011 with 63 guest rooms. With the rise of tourism to Iceland – and to north Iceland specifically - the management at Icelandair Hotels decided to proceed with the planned expansion, which was completed on time.

The hotel, which used to be a university, is centrally located in the small, but quaint and beautiful city of Akureyri. In fact most of the city’s attractions are within easy walking distance. These attractions include a modern swimming and spa complex (open year round), museums, restaurants, a beautiful church and much more.

The hotel itself offers stunning views for its guests; either east over Akureyri, the swimming pool and the fjord, or to west towards the two local mountains, Súlur and Hlidarfjall – which is also the most popular ski destination in Iceland. All the rooms are bright, airy and decorated in modern style, featuring Icelandic art and design. The hotel features a first class restaurant and a bar which is called “Room 14,’ referring to the building’s history as a university. The hotel’s award winning hotel garden, which faces south for maximum sun exposure, is open (and used) all year round. The hotel, which is a popular “ski hotel” also features a separate heated ski storage room.

According to the hotel manager, Sigrun Bjork Jakobsdottir, “the first winter of operation was beyond expectations and the fact that we are adding rooms is a reflection of the growth in tourism to north Iceland – many consider it to be one of the most beautiful regions in Iceland. The summer is looking very good, and so too is the upcoming winter season which offers skiing and Northern lights tours which are increasing in popularity.”
