White Plains, NY (PRWEB) June 07, 2012

Steffi Nossen School of Dance (SNSD) was recently presented with the Sophia Abeles Award for Education at ArtsWestchester’s Arts Awards 2012. The awards luncheon, held at the Crowne Plaza in White Plains, recognized five organizations and five individuals for their outstanding contributions to the cultural life of Westchester County.

“We are honored to receive this award from ArtsWestchester, a friend to Steffi Nossen throughout our long history,” said SNSD Executive Director Jeannie W. Aplin. “At SNSD we impart our founder’s unique vision of how dancers should be educated, not just technically and artistically, but through the shaping of their characters. At heart, dance is fun and we provide a sense of community to create and share the joy of dance.” Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2012, SNSD was founded on the belief that dance can touch and transform lives. The school emphasizes the development of body, mind, spirit and character.

Presented annually for 35 years, ArtsWestchester’s Arts Awards honor individuals and organizations whose vision, commitment and leadership enrich Westchester County. The celebration embraces those who create, teach and support the arts across the county’s many local communities.

While founded as a modern dance school, throughout its history, SNSD has embraced a variety of dance styles including ballet, contemporary jazz, hip-hop, and tap. Additionally, SNSD offers unique classes such as Classical Story Ballet, where some of the school’s youngest students learn movement and vocabulary while dancing to stories and music; composition; Yoga for Dancers; and workshops in World Dance forms. Live musical accompaniment for a majority of classes is offered. Students with special needs can be integrated into SNSD classes or enjoy the “Moving Wheels & Heels” program, offered to students of all abilities, wheelchair and stand up, allowing them to explore the joy of movement and music.
