Unique Paving Materials Announces the Addition of Integra-Seal(R) Asphalt Emulsion Based Sealer to Its High Performance Pavement Maintenance Product Line

Coal tar sealer has been used to seal asphalt pavements for many years but within the last few years there has been a great deal of research into new and more environmentally friendly products including asphalt based emulsion sealers.

People are familiar with the smell of the noxious odors emitted by a tar sealed pavement. Coal tar sealers can also burn the skin after prolonged or repeated contact.

Environmental studies and regulations have begun to impact coal tar sealer use in the USA.

Several government agencies already have regulation in place that bans the use of coal tar because coal tar based sealers may pollute our air and ground water.

Coal tar sealers contain PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), which are carcinogenic. The EPA believes it's possible that coal tar sealers containing PAHs may run off into water sewage systems as they deteriorate and be a cause of ground water pollution. Because of this threat of pollution, federal agencies are encouraging states to ban coal tar sealers. Further studies indicate that dust from the sealer can become airborne and pollute air in the surrounding areas with toxic PAHs.
