Pressed Tin Ceilings are No Longer a Thing of the Past

Chelsea Decorative Metal Company manufactures and distributes pressed tin ceilings with original designs that date back to the 1800s. Art deco, turn of the century and even victorian styles are available. They help todays builders recreate the atmosphere by starting at the top... the ceilings. The most popular designs are the victorian style, bringing back the 19th century look into the 21st century. With the film industry using the sheets for the authentic look of a period piece, it's no wonder that people choose to use it in their own home as well as in many restaurants and bars. Most people remember these ceilings from their childhood in the candy store and ice cream parlor, while others think of the hardware store or corner drug store and every once in a while they even remember them in there own home.

They come in 2' x 4' sheets with 6", 12" or 24" repeat patterns. The sheets are tin plated steel with a shiny silver finish which you can paint directly to with an oil-based paint or protect with an oil-based urethan. The sheets can be nailed to plywood or glued and nailed to sheetrock. The beautiful designs are great for walls and back splashes as well.

Glenn "The Tinman" Eldridge, owner of Chelsea, says, "The kitchen is the most popular room, but any room can be transformed through time". You can use a molded filler and plain filler with a cornice to help make a dining room look very elegant, while other rooms can share the same style but different size patterns, such as having a 12" design in the master bedroom while using a 6" design in the master bath.

Chelsea has friendly and knowledgeable people and the Tinman himself is the only person still in the business that has actually installed tin ceilings. The metal tiles are only $2.25 a sq. ft., and he says, "You won't find anything as inexpensive and as decorative as tin ceilings." With almost every design in stock, they can ship most orders immediately.

The newest products that are available are beautiful hand-painted finishes including copper patina, gothic gold, tuscan sunset and antique pewter to name a few. There is also a bright copper finish as well. All reasonably priced and can be found at http://www.tinman.com. You can view the many tin ceiling designs, patterns, finishes and a gallery with pictures of the finished installations. Used both commercially and residentially they are shipped anywhere in the world, but they are made in the USA. When you see a tin ceiling remember you are not only looking up, but also looking back.

Chelsea Decorative Metal Company is a family owned business now owned by Glenn "The Tinman" Eldridge. His father Teddy, sold and installed the tin ceilings in New York City. Glenn worked at Yankee Stadium as a vender, but it was after going to the Woodstock Festival (1969) that Glenn joined his father in the business. Glenn moved to Houston, Texas in 1978 and is the only person in the industry today that not only manufactures the tin ceilings, but has also installed them.
