The curator of the MD247telemedicine blog announced that she was asked to pull together a dire warning about the impending sunburn season. That’s basically a fancy way of stating that “she was asked to warn readers about the subject of sunburn.” With about fifty stores down the street from all MD247 readers carrying one brand of sunscreen or another, readers can see where she would have run out of both ideas and passion faster than one could have said “wear sunscreen to avoid sunburn.” Instead of making all readers nuts with an article that says little more than “don’t get sunburned this summer,” the blog curator decided that it would be more interesting to share a favorite commencement speech which also happens to discuss sunscreen.
Before the members of the press get a headache from rolling their eyes, it is necessary to preface sharing this commencement speech by explaining that it has an interesting history. The speech was supposedly given to the MIT graduating class of 1997 by the one and only Kurt Vonnegut, a rather renowned World War II veteran responsible for producing books like Slaughterhouse-Five. The truth of the matter is that the commencement speech was in no way produced by Kurt Vonnegut, the speech was actually never even given at any commencement ceremony. The eloquent display of words on parade was actually written by the journalist Mary Schmich for her regular article in the Chicago Tribune, and credit was incorrectly provided when a prankster forwarded the article under a false title. The work of Ms. Schmich was lost to the land of internet rumor, and I thought that this little assignment on the subject of sunburn was a great opportunity to give her some attention.
The curator of the MD247 blog wants readers to take a few moments to read what Mary Schmich would have told the MIT graduating class of 1997, then keep in mind that her first and last statements are precisely what the curator of the MD247 blog would tell readers to do to avoid sunburn.
