Assemblymember Mary Hayashi (D-Hayward) presented a resolution to Phoebe Ann Brown of Pleasanton’s Foothill High School, who won the 2012 CIF/Farmers Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.

Ms. Brown and Duncan Tomlin of San Diego’s Francis Parker School were selected from a pool of 453 candidates representing over 1,500 California Interscholastic Federation member schools statewide. They were honored yesterday at the California State Capitol.

“Phoebe Ann Brown is an outstanding young woman who has been a great inspiration on the court, in the classroom, and in the community,” stated Assemblymember Hayashi. “Her strength of character, accomplishments and commitment to making a positive impact on others is incredible. It’s encouraging to see emerging leaders like Phoebe, who give us tremendous hope for the future.”

Ms. Brown has been an exceptional scholar-athlete, maintaining a 4.17 grade-point average while a member of the varsity volleyball team and varsity soccer team. She also served as president of her high school, which has over 2,500 students.

Ms. Brown has been committed to serving her community since she was a youth. She volunteers with the National Charity League, the Pleasanton Public Library and Special Olympics. She earned the Girl Scouts of America Gold Award, which is the organization’s highest honor, and is an accomplished pianist.

She will attend Princeton University, with an interest in becoming a lawyer and majoring in political science. As a 2012 CIF/Farmers Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Ms. Brown will receive a $5,000 award.

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) was created in 1914 and is the governing body for high school sports in California. CIF represents more than 1,500 public and private member schools and more than 750,000 student-athletes.

Assemblymember Hayashi is the Chair of the Business, Professions, and Consumer Protection Committee and serves the 18th Assembly District, which includes San Leandro, Hayward, Dublin, most of Castro Valley and Pleasanton, and a portion of Oakland, as well as the unincorporated areas of Ashland, Cherryland, San Lorenzo and Sunol.
