Trails Carolina, a leading teen therapeutic wilderness program in western North Carolina, announced the opening of a wilderness boarding school. Trails Academy will combine the respected and proven therapeutic approach of Trails Carolina within a small, focused academic setting.

“We felt there was an opportunity to create a wilderness school that could be flexible enough to serve students who need a combination of support and proven success before going back home,” commented Graham Shannonhouse, Executive Director of Trails Carolina, “Trails Academy provides an alternative for students struggling behaviorally or academically in a traditional school environment who would benefit from our wilderness boarding school with a personalized academics and therapeutic approach.”

Trails Academy will provide young men, grades 9-12 with an opportunity to choose a path back to their lives which would continue the success they have experienced in their wilderness program while adding on the pieces of life they must be able to manage after graduation; family reunification, credit recovery, preparation for the next step on their journey. The program is offered in a small outdoor wilderness therapeutic boarding school setting.

Distinguishing Features Include:

  • Transference of Skills - successfully transfers the behaviors and attitudes learned in the wilderness to a more traditional setting with a flexible length of stay
  • Focus on Academics – progressive pedagogy and a strength based approach to credit recovery
  • Integrated Therapeutic Support – family, individual and group therapy
  • Experiential Design –wellness and adventure program supported with experience
  • Continued Parent Education – monthly visits, weekly calls and sessions, technology supported webinars, podcasts and parent portals.

“There are many reasons a teen struggles at home,” commented Dr. Drew Brennon Head of School, “Trails Academy offers a tremendous opportunity to break from the home environment and focus on new behaviors, attitudes, and academic success in an integrated and non-traditional experiential model.”

At Trails Academy students will be in the hands of a highly trained staff, among them, North Carolina State Licensed Teachers, fully licensed mental health clinicians, highly experienced mentors---many with deep, contemporary training in technical outdoor pursuits, backed with the requisite certifications. Supporting this effort is the highly successful and proven team at Trails Carolina, the sister organization that provides a full complement of wilderness-based treatments.
