Conscious Journeys (CJ), a volun-tourism organization working in rural Tibetan areas, organizes trips to Kham, the Tibetan region of western Sichuan Province. CJ offers trip details and contact information on their website.
Conscious Journeys’ general volunteer missions give travelers the opportunity to work with Tibetans on projects focused on health, education, environment, and community development. Conscious Journeys Volun-Tourists can make help rural Tibetan communities by building greenhouses, toilets, compost bins, doing site clean-up, distributing school and medical supplies, educating children by teaching English or arts and crafts, or by assisting local project coordinators with development project assessment and evaluation.
In addition to volunteer service, participants will have the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and culture of Tibet by visiting monasteries and temples, hiking or horseback riding through stunning mountain scenery, relaxing in hot springs and witnessing traditional Tibetan festivals and performances.
Volunteer missions are designed for travelers who wish to experience Tibet while helping better the lives of rural Tibetans. Participants need not have a special skill, just an open mind and a genuine compassion for others. Volunteers may also choose to assist skilled professional groups (medical and dental missions, etc.). Given the rugged terrain and high altitude, participants must be physically fit, able to handle altitudes up to 12,000 ft, and afford to cover their own expenses.
The CJ service program primarily operates in remote villages in Kham and Amdo regions currently known as Sichuan, Qinghai and Yunnan Provinces. Depending on the location of the selected community, coordination and logistics, cost, and participant availability, the programs generally last between 12 and 21 days, and can optimally run from May to October.
Participants receive a trip logistics guide when the reserve a space. It includes all the essential information needed to obtain a Chinese visa and make other necessary preparations for the trip. The guide includes suggested travel gear, a recommended reading list, a day-to-day itinerary, health and safety information, and other key information to make the trip successful and safe.
Conscious Journeys is the volun-tourism program of the NGO Tibetan Village Project. Tours focus on providing services to local communities, practicing sustainable travel, supporting local businesses and connecting in a positive and meaningful way with Tibetan communities across the plateau.
