The U.S. Open Tennis Championship dates all the way back to 1881 and it originally began as a men's singles event. Fast forward to 2012 and now this tournament includes men's and women's singles, mixed doubles and women's doubles over a two week time period. Chronologically it is the fourth Grand Slam tournament among Wimbledon, the French Open and the Australian Open. The tournament is comprised of five main events including:
1. Men’s single
2. Women’s single
3. Men’s Double
4. Women’s Double
5. Mixed Doubles
Special events for junior and senior tennis players plus wheelchair events have also been added to the tournament. Since 1978, it has been held at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. In the early years, only men's competitions were held in US National tennis tournaments. The challenge system was inducted into the tournament in 1884. This system remained part of national tennis events until 1911. The challenge system allowed automatic qualification of the defending champion for the following years finals.
In 1887, the first women’s championship took place at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. Soon after this, mixed doubles events were included in the main championship. From 1890 to 1906, the sectional US tennis events were held in eastern and western divisions. This was to pick the two best players who then competed in a playoff to select who would meet the defending champions in the tournament’s challenge round. The above mentioned events were included in the US Open in 1968 which resulted in the Open Era. This was the first time when combined tennis competitions were open to professional players. Last year, 96 male players and 63 female players entered the championship. The US Tennis Open has been a Grand Slam tournament since 1970 and utilizes tiebreak rules in the last game set. None of the other Grand Slams use a tiebreak in the fifth set of the game except the US Open. All other Grand Slams go for playing with service games in the fifth set. Jimmy Connors is credited as the only tennis player who won US Open titles for singles on all three surfaces on which the game is normally played. In the Women's Singles US Open tournament, Chris Evert is the only player with winning titles on two surfaces.
The USTA has announced that the qualifying rounds of the US Open are a free week for Tennis Lovers which means it is open for free viewing by the public. The ongoing qualifying competitions will ultimately come up with players who have proved themselves as worthy participants for the main US Open Tournament. Prize amount for winner of US Open Tennis Championsip is $1 million. The US Open is quite a spectacular and popular United States sports event.
