For the upcoming Spring 2013 season, New York-based fashion designer Suma Chander explores the symbiotic relationship between nature and architecture, finding inspiration through a juxtaposition of the art nouveau and art deco movements of the early 20th century. As evident in past collections, Suma incorporates this season’s focus into a balance of structured and flowing silhouettes, while continuing to express her unique perspective on the East-West dichotomy through fashion.

Though a New Yorker for over a decade, Suma Chander grew up in India. The culturally rich environment helped nurture her eye for exceptional fabrics and ornate details as well as an appreciation for exotic art and architecture. While this background provided Chander with certain eastern affection, moving to New York encouraged her to further cultivate a design aesthetic that embraced her heritage, yet possessed a striking modernized edge. As a result, Suma Chander evolved into a line for the confident, independent woman with a lust for life, travel and all things beautiful.

With this Spring Season, Chander infuses the collection with a decadence that pays homage to the art nouveau and art deco movements of western world, but applies the aesthetic concepts to an interpretation of engineered landscapes and architecture found in the eastern world. Inspired by the ancient staircases at Jantar Mantar and Chand Baori, Suma Chander incorporates linear symmetry and use of embroidered geometric shapes and patterns in many of her evening attire. To offset the starkness of order and harmony within the line, the designer provides a playful balance of chaos through use of organic, free-flowing lines and capricious diffusions through intricate beadwork that reflects engineered land formations, such as the Tegallalang Rice Terrace found in Bali. As in past collections, Chander paints these scenes onto the body with use of metallics and neutrals, supported by pops of shocking blues, bright whites and pitch blacks.

The result is a striking, introspective expression of sophisticated evening attire that garners the admiration of the cultivated woman. Moreover, this forthcoming season promises to propel Suma Chander from its early stages towards a level of establishment that commands the attention of the surrounding fashion world.
