It was announced yesterday that Third Wave Systems, Inc. has been selected for participation in the United States Energy Department’s $54 million Innovative Manufacturing Initiative (IMI). The national program is a response to the Obama Administration’s blueprint for an American economy built to last, investing in projects that advance transformational technologies and materials that can help American manufacturers dramatically increase the energy efficiency of their operations, reduce costs, and reduce the energy needed to power their facilities. Projects were selected for Department of Energy (DOE) funding through a highly-competitive bidding process; DOE and private sector support for Third Wave Systems’ project totals approximately $5.1 million.
Third Wave Systems’ project, titled “Sustainable Manufacturing via Multi-scale Physics-based Process Modeling and Manufacturing-informed Design,” is a three-year initiative focused on developing technologies that result in a new manufacturing-informed design paradigm that will empower U.S. manufacturers to evaluate the effects of design changes and various materials, anticipate part quality and manufacturing costs prior to implementation, and produce lower-waste, lower-cost manufacturing programs. By providing a comprehensive set of computational tools to accurately model machining process and making these tools available at every stage of the product lifecycle, Third Wave’s program will bridge the existing knowledge gap between upstream design and downstream manufacturing processes.

I am confident this program will adeptly further the sustainable manufacturing efforts that are so key to the future of the American manufacturer.”
Each of the thirteen projects, selected from more than 250 applications, will advance technologies that are currently in the early stages of development, ensuring benefits to a large cross-section of the domestic economy. Third Wave’s program promises a manufacturing-informed design framework generic to all manufacturing processes, while focusing on achieving tangible economic, productivity, and environmental benefits due to the ubiquitous need for machining. Collaborating with Third Wave for the project will be leading experts from Georgia Institute of Technology, The Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, and University of California Santa Barbara. It is expected that work will be commence in late 2012; management at Third Wave Systems is excited to get started.
