The satirical Broadway musical, The Book of Mormon, is surely one to remember. Written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone who created the animated comedy South Park, and Robert Lopez who co-wrote and co-composed Avenue Q; the plot is astounding and entertaining at the least. Trey Parker and Matt Stone both grew up in Colorado and became friends at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Parker had a notably rich past in theatre while in high school. After they met, the two writers worked together on a musical film, Cannibal! The Musical, in 1993. By 1997, the two had created South Park for the television station Comedy Central. With that and their 1998 film Orgazmo, the two had numerous experiences with comedic treatment of the Mormon religion.
In 2003, while working on their film, Team America: World Police, they were encouraged to attend the musical Avenue Q on Broadway. After seeing the duo in the crowd, Robert Lopez introduced himself to them and told them that their movie South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut was extremely influential in the making of Avenue Q. After going out for drinks together, the three found that they had similar aspirations in writing something involving the religious leader Joseph Smith. After years of development, the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon opened in March 2011.
The musical production tells the story of two hopeful yet naive missionaries who travel to a far-off village in Uganda in order to share the Book of Mormon – which only one of them knows very well. Little do they know, the population is being threatened by an infamous warlord and is more concerned about famine, war, poverty, and AIDS than about what they have to say.
Book of Mormon tickets are selling fast and it’s easy to see why! This awesome theatrical production has earned many positive responses by critics as well as numerous awards including nine Tony Awards for various categories like Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical.
