We all know that going to the gym can be a chore. You’ve got to get psyched up to work out, get dressed, drive to the facility and bring a level of intensity. Well if you thought that was a chore, then what Rolda Darlington does can be considered a monumental undertaking because she does all that and more while being legally blind.

Rolda Darlington was pronounced legally blind 3 years ago due to complications from diabetes. “The loss of my eyesight due to my diabetes required me to make some considerable life changes. I had to overhaul my entire life, most importantly, diet and exercise,” said Darlington. “Being legally blind, I couldn’t work out. I tried a lot of other gyms and exercise programs, but none of them stuck until I got involved with Koko FitClub in Coral Springs, FL.”

Koko FitClub markets itself as a unique gym experience and claims to be the world’s first automated personal training studio. It is a fusion of advanced technology and world class personal training. Members see quantified, tracked results on screen and on a personalized web page. Koko FitClub claims that a person can do their entire workout in 45 mintes or less.

Rolda lives in Miramar, FL and requires transportation in order to make the 1 hour trek to Koko FitClub in Coral Springs. Due to the distance and the dropping off and picking up of other handicapped riders, it takes her up to 4 hours to get to Koko FitClub, work out and get home. “Before Koko FitClub I couldn’t stick to a workout plan. But the people at Koko FitClub were so helpful and supportive. The trainers really made a difference. I know absolutely nothing about working out and they helped me figure out my workout routine so I was no longer floundering. The trained staff helped accommodate all my needs and helped me through every step of the way. Now I can’t wait to get to the gym and work out,” stated Darlington.

Rolda uses an iPhone interface with the state-of-the-art equipment at Koko FitClub. The interface allows her to hear the instructions from the machinery without having to see the digital interface. When exercising at Koko FitClub, everything is done on one piece of machinery called a Smartrainer that does over 100 exercises. Rolda is legally blind, but can see well enough to adjust the weights herself due to the blinking light indicators on the machine.

“I started at Koko FitClub in February of 2012. Since then I have increased my strength by over 10% and dramatically increased my cardio. I now have a sense of purpose with my workouts. At Koko FitClub, my entire workout is delivered to me each time I go. Before Koko FitClub the gym felt insurmountable to me. The pre-set workouts, audio instruction and small environment have helped me overcome all of my obstacles. Now I look forward to getting to the gym,” stated Rolda.

Rolda is currently studying for her P.h.D. in political science and tutors students at Florida Atlantic University Athletic Assoc. “Your fitness goals are up to you, but Koko FitClub empowers you to handle it yourself. If I can do it, so can anyone,” said Darlington.
