The first ever Up & Running Half Marathon Series will donate all proceeds to school gardens through Denver Urban Gardens.

LÄRABAR® (LARABAR.COM) maker of the original fruit and nut bar, is excited to announce the first ever LÄRABAR Up & Running Half Marathon with 5k and Kids 1k. All proceeds from the race after expenses will be used toward getting school gardens “up and running” through Denver Urban Gardens, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating community gardens in Denver. Up & Running will take place on Saturday, August 18, 2012, in Denver, Colorado. Start times are 7:00 am for the half marathon, 8:00 am for the 5K, and 10:00 am for the kids 1K.

“We at LÄRABAR are tremendously excited about our inaugural Up & Running Race. Gathering the community together and doing something physically active for a good cause was the inspiration for us, and kicking off our first race in our own beautiful hometown city is really thrilling,” said LÄRABAR founder Lara Merriken, who was once a D.U.G. community garden leader, and plans to run the 5K race that day. “Denver Urban Gardens is a wonderful organization which creates tremendous value in the Denver area by teaching kids and communities about where food comes from.”

Denver Urban Gardens (D.U.G.) was established in 1985 to support Denver residents in creating sustainable, food-producing neighborhood community gardens through youth education and community training programs, which have lead to tangible, positive changes in community health and food security. D.U.G. now operates over 100 community gardens throughout Metro Denver, including 30 school-based community gardens. The proceeds from Up & Running will specifically fund the completion of two elementary school gardens, one middle school garden, and one high school garden in the Denver Metro Area.

Executive Director of D.U.G. Michael Buchenau said, “I first met Lara 15 years ago when she volunteered with our organization to open the Grey Street Community Garden. Over the years, her efforts to lead the garden and work with under-privileged children became an inspiration to the entire D.U.G. community. Working with LÄRABAR to launch Up & Running is an honor for us. LÄRABAR’s commitment to real food and healthy lifestyles matches our organization's values of community health and sustainability. We're grateful for their dedication to helping us complete four new school gardens, to ensure that each garden community will be empowered with the resources to improve the lives of their children in a long-term way.”

The half marathon will begin at the Elaine T. Valente Open Space Park in Thornton, and end in downtown Denver at City of Cuernavaca Park (named for Denver’s sister city in Mexico), located at 20th Street and Platte Street. The 5K and kids 1K will begin and end at City of Cuernavaca Park. Shuttles will be available starting at 5:45am to take half marathon participants from City of Cuernavaca Park, the event hub, to the start line.

The finish line at City of Cuernavaca Park will be bustling throughout the day with music, food and activities for kids hosted by D.U.G. centered around gardening, art and taking care of oneself. And for those with a more competitive streak, awards will be given to half marathon and 5K participants for best times in various categories, as well as special “über Awards” –

available to all participants - for the most über Attire, the most über Hairdo, the most über Duo or Group, the most über Finish, and more – so come prepared to have fun and keep it real!
