Many biomedical researchers struggle to publish their research. Part of the problem is lack of time, but a significant contributor is lack of familiarity with what is an increasingly complex and competitive process. This failure to publish results in critical gaps in our knowledge.

TipTopTitles (http://www.TipTopTitles.com) is the first product launched by Medicine in Practice, Inc. (http://www.MedicineInPractice.com). The website is free to all visitors, and provides three invaluable resources to guide researchers through best practices in biomedical publication: a database of the leading biomedical journal profiles to support accurate journal selection; a library of guidelines to ease compliance; and a growing “Core Curriculum” of video tutorials to guide researchers through key steps in the research process from protocol development to successful publication.

“I have been helping researchers navigate the medical publication process for more than 20 years,” stated Tim Bacon, CMPP – CEO of Medicine in Practice, Inc. “During that time I have discussed the challenges with a large number of both author/researchers and biomedical journal editors and publishers, so I understand both sides of the equation.”

First, many researchers submit their manuscript to the wrong journal. This gets them a very prompt rejection and wastes time for both the researcher and the journal’s editorial team. TipTopTitles provides an extensive database of journal profiles that can be used to research the optimal choice of journal, thus helping researchers in overcoming that first barrier.

The next hurdle is quality evaluation, initially by the journal’s editorial team and subsequently by peer-reviewers. There are many aspects to this careful evaluation of research submitted for publication. Each submission is not only vetted for originality and quality methodology, but also to insure that researchers have submitted a manuscript that is well-written and complies with the journal’s submission format. A critical part of this process is a detailed check of compliance with the various reporting and other guidelines.

To help researchers overcome this hurdle TipTopTitles provides both an extensive and growing library of guidelines and a growing “Core Curriculum” of expert-led video tutorials. These guide researchers through the application of each guideline as well as critical steps in the research process from protocol development, trial registration, journal selection, and successful interaction with the journal’s editorial team, each of which is critical to successful publication.

“While the Internet can be a terrific resource, there are few, if any, websites that provide the depth and breadth of information needed to properly support this important phase of the research process,” stated Bacon. “We intend to make TipTopTitles the most practical and authoritative site on the Web that provides the full range of critical information needed by biomedical researchers.”

TipTopTitles is the first of a range of websites planned to greatly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of key steps of the biomedical research process.
