Difficult problems often require creative solutions. Poverty Resolutions’ approach to their latest project scores high in creativity. This week, as part of their effort to fight poverty in Haiti, work has begun on a tilapia farm. Located at the House of Hope Orphanage outside of Port-au-Prince, the farm uses a unique design to promote the growth of the fish.
Above the large pool of water that houses the tilapia lies a series of chicken coops. The droppings from the chickens fall through the mesh floor, providing a direct source of food for the fish. The droppings also stimulate growth of algae, an additional food source.
Sustainability and long-term impact are concepts that drive all projects developed by Poverty Resolutions. Set to be completed by the end of July, the tilapia farm will provide a source of protein for the children in the orphanage and the people in the local community. In addition to improved nutrition, the project will also create a job and be a source of income for the orphanage. The income from selling the tilapia will be used to purchase feed for the chickens, as well as support the work of the orphanage.
