East River Esplanade: Judging from the Waterfront

Unlike Hudson River Park on the West Side, the walkways, bicycle paths and benches along the East River from 60th Street to 125th are only intermittently well-maintained and user-friendly. Last fall, the non-profit citizens' group CIVITAS sponsored an ideas competition, challenging architects and planners to redesign this section of the East River Esplanade and to address urban issues as varied as community access to recreational space and the threat of rising water levels. Join members of the selection jury including Signe Nielsen, Principal at Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects, and lawyer Albert K. Butzel, veteran of the battle over Westway, to hear about the winners they chose from 91 proposals.
